ITU, the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs), organized a special and inspiring event under the name “ITU at glance” for SUMAS students. The presentation was held by Fernando Rivera – ITU Coordinator, Corporate Strategic Planning Strategic Planning & Membership Dept, who introduced the organization, shared its priorities and accented an extreme importance and actuality of sustainability direction for everyone.

Mr. Rivera described in details the main ITU purpose to create by 2020 an information society, empowered by the interconnected world, where telecommunication/ICTs enable and accelerate social, economic and environmentally sustainable growth and development for everyone. He highlighted 4 major targets such as growth, inclusiveness, sustainability and innovation. During an interactive presentation, SUMAS students were able to discuss key challenges of sustainable development and their personal role in this continuous process of changes and improvements.

The main speaker concluded that the United Nations in general and ITU particularly are now more than ever involved in the field of sustainability.  In the modern world when there are so many issues with climate change and human security, sustainable development is the main answer, global priority, and the key direction. By achieving 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs – https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org) and implementing different areas of the corresponding action from a part of such organization as ITU in this evolutionary process, a role of sustainability manager and professionals of the field seems to be crucially important for the present and for the future.
