Catherine Ferrier, Ph.D.
Professor
Dr. Catherine Ferrier is a seasoned Professor, trainer and facilitator, specialized in systemic approaches to sustainable development. At SUMAS she teaches Responsible Management to Master and MBA students and Management and Corporate Social Responsibility to Bachelor students.
A graduate of the Universities of Grenoble and Geneva, she studied European and International Affairs before focusing her research and teaching on global environmental policies, in particular freshwater and climate change. Her Ph.D. thesis researched the legal and institutional frameworks of carbon markets.
After her Ph.D., she developed and led an executive education programme on Corporate Social Responsibility. Her interest for public policy responses to sustainability issues shifted then to understanding the role the private sector plays in implementing, and sometimes preceding, public policy developments in this area. Building on over twenty years of research, teaching and publishing in the sustainability field, she realized that the economic, social and environmental problems the world face are so inextricably intertwined that the current public and private responses can only have very limited effects. She trained on systems thinking and tools and now facilitates strategic conversations around sustainability in businesses and non-profit organisations with a systemic approach.
